Near Death Experiences (NDE)

The subject of near death experiences is a fascinating one, though I have not experienced this phenomenon myself, I have read extensively on the subject with authors such as; Dr Melvin Morse and Dr Raymond Moody.

I have also listened as a number of my friends related their own experiences of undergoing a near death experience. This phenomenon transcends across cultural boundaries and beliefs, all over the world.

So, what is a near death experience? The answer to this is a detailed one, though for ease of reading can be best summed up as people who are quite literally on the point of death. Whether through accident or whilst on the operating theatre for example, who undergo an experience, which is so vivid, so rich in detail and depth of feeling, that when they awake, this experience quite literally changes their life. People having undergone such an experience are no longer afraid of dying, and tend to live their lives to the fullest.

A brief example

“When I was eight or nine, I was sick with measles. There were no antibiotics in those days and my illness became critical. My parents were taking turns sleeping with me to keep an eye on me. On this particular night, I remember feeling just terrible and waking up. But I wasn’t in my body, I was hovering above it, looking down on my mother and I

My mother was awake and she noticed that I wasn’t breathing. She called for my dad who ran into the room and began shaking me.

I went up a tunnel at this point, I was headed for a light, but at the same time, and there was a voice in my head that said, “Let her go back. She isn’t ready yet”. I went into this beautiful bright light anyway, it was a beautiful feeling that totally took all my fears of death away

Then I came back.”

Excerpt taking from “transformed by the light” by Dr Melvin Morse, with Paul Perry, published in 1993 by BCA publishers.

The near death experience, consists of a number of traits or variables, which can be experienced collectively as a whole, or individually as parts of the whole. These traits are listed below.

·Peace – Feelings of fear are removed, as the feelings of peace enfold, nothing really matters anymore.

·Out of Body experience – Being able to view your own body, looking down onto it, viewing what is occurring around you and retaining a conscious memory of this.

·Tunnel – Feelings of moving up through and along a tunnel, towards a light at the far end

·Beings/People of light – Being met by people surrounded in light, feeling the love radiating from them, at peace, at oneness, totally enshrouded in love.

·Life Review – Undergoing a review of what has occurred within our own lives, the good and the bad (probably what changes us the most as we can gain a modicum of understanding of the hurt we have caused those around us through our own actions)

·Not wanting to return – A reluctance to return to the waking world. Due to such strong feelings of being encapsulated in love and peace.

Granted, the above traits may not account for all of that are felt by the many people having undergone such a moving experience, though I hope they provide an insight as to what may occur.

For a better insight however, I would recommend reading the following:

·“Closer to the light” by Dr Melvin Morse, with Paul Perry

·“Transformed by the light” by Dr Melvin Morse, with Paul Perry

·“The Light beyond” by Dr Raymond Moody
